About the role

Due to the growing workload within the remote sensing hydrographic survey team, and significant work on the books for 2021, we are seeking to appoint a highly motivated individual to join our team. The role will be primarily a field-based role with a degree of office-based duties to assist our hydrographic team. This will include:

  • Organising hydrographic field surveys
  • Assisting with the undertaking of hydrographic surveys
  • Operation of remote / autonomous vessel
  • Processing of hydrographic data
  • Contributing to survey reporting
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Topographic / GNSS survey
  • GIS work (analysis, cartography etc.)
  • Contributing to survey reports and tenders
  • Marketing activity

The successful applicant will report into the Hydrographic Technical Specialist and will be expected to assist with the management and technical duties for the hydrographic based projects run out of the remote sensing team.

Due to the nature of the role, the job is to be based from our headquarters in Stockport, Greater Manchester. Under the current COVID-19 guidelines, if not out on survey work, working from home is encouraged.

About you

You will be energetic and enthusiastic, happy to spend time on the road and in the field, in all of the weather conditions the UK has to offer. You will ideally have a background in or a working knowledge of hydrographic survey. You will be technically minded and competent to work through technical issues with both survey hardware and software as well as being able to deliver field surveys from start to finish.

Ideally you will be competent in the following:

  • Working as part of a survey team conducting hydrographic survey
  • Boat handling
  • Experience of working over water
  • Experience of using HYPACK hydrographic software
  • Experience with survey grade GNSS (base and rover and network rover applications) and total station technologies
  • GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS)
  • Boat handling qualification to a minimum RYA Level 2
  • B + E qualification and experience towing and launching large – medium sized vessels
  • Experience of multibeam and side scan technologies
  • Experience of GNSS surveying and control networks
  • Experience of operating unmanned surface vessels
  • Managing field projects
  • Processing of hydrographic data to produce:
    • Bathymetric datasets in 2D contour and 3D surface models
    • Side scan mosaics
    • Processing of ADCP data
  • Tender writing
  • Report writing
  • Marketing APEM services to existing and potential new clients
  • CSCS card
  • Water hygiene card
  • Experience in 4 x 4 off road driving

Training can be provided for the right candidate and some of the above can be taught on the job. It is hoped that the successful candidate will have as many of the competencies as possible and able to ‘hit the ground running’ when in post.

The role will require working away from home for extended periods (weeks at a time) with the occasional requirement to work weekends.

Required skills:

  • A minimum Bachelor of Science degree in hydrographic survey or relevant environmental degree (MSc preferable)
  • Clean, full driving licence
  • Willing and able to time away from home (travel to and from sites with overnight stays COVID permitting)
  • Ability to swim
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Flexible, adaptable and punctual
