Here at APEM we are passionate about wildlife habitats and protection and are looking for a Field Scientist or Senior Field Scientist to help deliver field surveys for freshwater projects new and existing clients and to further develop what is an already vibrant business here at APEM Ireland.

Only 6 months on from first opening our doors here in Sept 2020, we’ve already secured a number of contracts and the services of three additional staff and there is a lot of fieldwork to be done. Your addition to the team can really help with that.

About the roles

We are recruiting a Field Scientist or Senior Field Scientist (Freshwater) to join the APEM Ireland team and help to deliver on-the-ground work, with support from Senior Consultants and Directors already in place.

With several projects already won, numerous connections with interested parties secured and a number of major submissions already made to clients, as well as a place on four consultancy frameworks, APEM Ireland is well set for 2021. We are now looking to add capable and motivated staff as part of a growing team and business in Ireland, as follows:

  • Field Scientist / Senior Field Scientist – Freshwater Ecology

The Senior Field / Field Scientist will provide field survey capability to the APEM Ireland office. These staff will spend most of your time in the field, undertaking a wide range of ecological and environmental survey and sampling work, interspersed with periods of desk work to analyse, interpret and report on the field data collected.

The main area of focus for this recruit will be the freshwater environment with a focus on work driven by the Water Framework Directive and the Habitats Directive.

About you

As a Field Scientist / Senior Field Scientist (Freshwater), you will be a graduate with a few years’ experience or a postgraduate in an ecological subject with experience and background in freshwater ecology (fish, macroinvertebrates, macrophytes, phytoplankton etc). You might already be a graduate member of a body, such as CIEEM, CIWEM etc and/or considering achieving Chartered status. You will be energetic and enthusiastic, happy to spend time on the road and in the field in all of the weather conditions Ireland has to offer. You will be a practically-minded field scientist with a can-do attitude, willing to travel widely in Ireland and undertake a range of survey work. You will be experienced/certified in a range of field survey techniques kick-sampling, electro-fishing, aquatic ecology and WFD walkover surveys).

Required skills

  • Preferably an Master’s Degree, minimum a Bachelor of Science Degree, in an environmental or ecological subject
  • Clean, full driving licence
  • Willing and able to time away from home (travel to and from sites with overnight stays COVID permitting)
  • Ability to swim
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Field survey and sampling skills
  • Field identification skills for at least one of marine/terrestrial birds or mammals, plants (terrestrial or aquatic), invertebrates (terrestrial or aquatic) or marine/freshwater fish
  • Flexible, adaptable and punctual
  • Member of a chartered institution and considering chartered status
