About the role
This is an exciting opportunity for a high-calibre, motivated and commercially-minded environmental specialist to lead the expansion and management of our terrestrial ecology services and support this developing, expanding business area. Project work will likely include utility, infrastructure, energy, housing and commercial development schemes across the UK, as well as input into river engineering projects, wetland restoration schemes and environmental regulator investigations.
As a Divisional Director you will be a member of the operational board of directors for APEM Limited, working with APEM’s wider senior management team with a remit to create and implement company strategy. You’ll work with internal and external teams liaising with clients, Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, Environment Agency, Local Authorities and other key stakeholders.
You’ll provide authoritative ecological advice and be at the forefront of innovative mitigation solutions and enhancement considerations across a range of sites with varying levels of environmental and ecological sensitivities, including schemes that interact with European and National designated sites. You’ll have a detailed understanding of nature conservation and environmental legislation, ecology guidance and planning regulations in the UK, as well as experience of the protected species licensing, Habitats Regulations Assessments and Environmental Impact Assessments.
Across APEM you’ll work as part of a team of specialists and you’ll have great written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work closely with internal and external stakeholders. A key part of the role is to ensure that this division is working towards APEM’s strategic goals as agreed by the group board, as well as working closely with the other APEM divisions. You will work with the operational board of directors to manage the marketing, operations and business development and expansion of the division, and will have direct accountability for all commercial and technical drivers. You’ll therefore need to be an effective and authoritative communicator, with strong scientific integrity and established business acumen, and the ability to build consensus and relationships amongst managers, clients and colleagues. You will have demonstrable experience in strategy, driving growth, business development and leadership, and will have a solid understanding of business finance and budgeting.
You will be self-motivated and able to work independently as well as within project teams drawn from our regional offices. You will also have the drive and enthusiasm to expand and manage the current terrestrial ecology portfolio within APEM and to represent it externally. Thus, the ability to communicate effectively with clients in all sectors and a sense of pride in, and responsibility for your work are paramount for this position. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to work to tight deadlines.
Candidates will have a minimum of an MSc or PhD in a relevant discipline and be a member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environment Management (CIEEM) or an equivalent organisation.
You will be primarily office-based , although site visits, client meetings and fieldwork are likely to be required on occasion, which may include overnight stays. Your work may also take you abroad, though not for more than a few weeks at a time; therefore, a full driving licence and personal flexibility is essential.
