APEM are continuing to grow in all divisions, heading for a new record turnover and we are pushing into a number of new areas as well as expanding our team. We work on an extremely diverse range of coastal and marine projects and have ambitious plans for 2021 and beyond, within the UK and globally.
In particular we are developing our marine mammal capabilities and this is an exciting opportunity for a marine mammal ecologist to join our marine consultancy team.
About the role
Are you currently a marine mammal specialist who has gained consultancy experience? Perhaps you come from a regulatory body or academic background and want to develop your experience within a world class consultancy.
With the support of APEM’s highly experienced marine team you will be involved with tendering activity and all aspects of project delivery including marine survey design; stakeholder and client engagement; data review/data collation and data analysis and interpretation. You will conduct this for APEM’s wide range of marine projects with particular emphasis on marine mammal projects.
Authoring and coordinating delivery for a wide range of marine mammal ecological assessments (Scoping reports, PEIR and EIA and HRA reports) is an essential part of the role. In addition, you will have management responsibilities for a variety of marine projects ensuring delivery to a diverse client base.

We are looking for an individual with a strong team ethic and keen to work with colleagues across a range of marine disciplines. You will be driven by the requirements for sustainable development in the marine environment and the need for environmental protection and effective management.
Able to demonstrate an excellent understanding of marine marine ecology and assessment with relevant commercial awareness, the successful candidate will have a detailed knowledge and understanding of policy/legislation relevant to marine ecology conservation and its application for marine ecology assessments.
A high level of attention to detail, the ability to work to tight timeframes, good delegation skills and the provision of specialist technical input are key aspects of the role. You will be required to work both independently and lead project teams and communicate effectively with clients.
You will ideally have a number of years of experience of working within a marine consultancy and preferably with experience at the senior consultant level.
- The successful candidate will ideally have the following experience:
- M.Sc. or Ph.D. in marine ecology or related discipline
- Ability to organise, undertake and analyse marine mammal visual and acoustic surveys
- Undertaking marine mammal impact assessments (including HRA, EIA)
- Underwater noise impact assessment
- Preparation and requirements for EPS licences
- Population and impact modelling
- Understanding of relevant policy/legislation
- Excellent communication and reporting skills
- Use of statistical packages including PRIMER
- Extensive use of Word and Excel
- Proficiency in GIS software packages would be advantageous.
