Natural capital is an exciting and rapidly growing area of APEM. As our team expands, we are looking to enhance our capability by appointing a Senior Natural Capital Consultant.
As a Senior natural capital consultant, you will work within a wider team of aquatic scientists with cross-cutting expertise in ecology, fisheries science, hydrology, hydro/geomorphology and water quality to conduct natural capital analysis for a range of environmental projects This will be across a range of projects for the environment / conservation agencies, the water and energy industries and supporting services; unified by the theme of protecting the aquatic environment, whilst aiding development to take place where appropriate.
The purpose of the role will be to enhance our natural capital services to our clients in industries such as water, energy, infrastructure, retail, and their regulators.
Key features of the Senior Consultant role will be managing a range of projects to ensure the delivery of high-quality outputs within budget. This role will also require contributing to or leading the production of competitive tenders and developing further bespoke assessment tools.
You will be primarily desk-based, although site visits and client meetings will be required.

We would ideally expect you to have experience of working extensively within the consultancy sector, with at least three years’ experience and ideally professional accreditation.
You will be an enthusiastic self-starter with an interest in the environment. You will be qualified to a minimum of BSc. level in a relevant discipline, with evidence of experience relevant to the role you are applying for. Whether you are an applicant with academic, regulatory, consultancy or third sector experience you will need to demonstrate your ability to apply your skills in a fast-paced commercial consultancy context through experience of managing projects and dealing with people effectively and professionally.
You will have good IT literacy and data analysis skills, will be numerate and have a good eye for detail. Experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is highly desirable.
Typically, 3-4 years’ professional experience
Experience of working with relevant guidance i.e. Defra’s Enabling a Natural Capital Approach and the Water Resource Planning Guideline
Experience of working in a commercial consulting environment
Excellent skills and ability in report writing
Previous involvement in natural capital assessments
An understanding of key UK environmental legislation
Project management experience
Tendering/proposal writing experience
Chartered status/working towards chartered status to an appropriate institution (IEMA, CIWEM, CIEEM etc.)
A Masters level qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant environmental/natural science or environmental economics
Understanding of environmental net gain, biodiversity net gain and social value
Proven ability in environmental valuation methods (monetisation)
Proven track record in applying the Biodiversity Metric 3.0
Experience in Geographic Information Systems
