Purpose / Scope of role
The Principal Consultant will work within the Marine Wildlife Survey team within the Marine Division. One of the main roles of the team is to organise, undertake and analyse aerial surveys of birds – particularly offshore. The Marine Survey Team manage, co-ordinate and report on digital aerial surveys for ornithology and marine mammals, from data collection to reporting. The team uses robust science to find solutions for both the private and public sectors.
The purpose of this role is to work closely with the Associate Director and other Principal Consultants within the Marine Division and wider APEM team to expand the marine wildlife team, influencing and shaping current work streams, managing 20+ projects, overseeing senior and junior staff and expanding the current customer base across the UK, Europe and worldwide.
Key Responsibilities and accountabilities
- To work closely with the Principals and Associate Directors to expand the business across the UK, Europe and worldwide.
- To work closely with the Principals and Associate Directors to set and deliver the business strategies for the marine wildlife team.
- To lead and mentor a team of consultants, technical specialists and senior consultants to produce timely, accurate and high quality products and services.
- To be responsible for part of the output of the wider team, reviewing and signing off reports, providing constructive feedback and coaching where required in order to achieve this.
- To be responsible for ensuring that all output is delivered to the highest standard, in line with timescales agreed with the client, within budget and to the highest technical quality.
- To be involved in all aspects of tender preparation including writing proposals, setting budgets, programmes and scope alone, with other internal teams and in partnership with external organisations.
- Project management of multiple large scale projects with multidisciplinary teams based in various locations.
- Client management, successfully developing, maintaining and managing internal and external stakeholder relationships.
- To mentor, guide and develop more junior members of the team.
- Business development – UK, Ireland, Europe and RoW, taking APEM into new markets/sectors for wildlife survey as and associated activities, with existing clients as well as securing and managing new work/opportunities, maintaining and extending relationships and developing knowledge on local policy/operations/industry and stakeholders.
- To lead sales and marketing strategy for the team, attend and present at appropriate business development events including networking events and conferences.
Additional responsibilities may include:
- Client management, successfully developing, maintaining, and managing internal and external stakeholder relationships.
- Managing partners, sub-contractors and interfaces with external parties, on technical deliverables.
- Managing internal interfaces and cross divisional services to maximise efficiencies
- To share responsibility for staff’s BeMyBest – APEM’s internal development programme and developing a high performing team.
- To lead on project delivery of Marine Wildlife Surveys and tendering opportunities
- To be responsible for part of the output of the wider Marine Wildlife team, reviewing and signing off reports, providing constructive feedback and coaching where required in order to achieve this.
