About the role
The Remote Sensing and Ornithology Divisions are a rapidly expanding part of the business, with a selection of state of the art remote sensing equipment. As a company, we pride ourselves on our commitment to scientific rigour and an excellent service in providing solutions to our clients.
This is an excellent opportunity for a high-calibre and motivated scientist to join our growing team. We are looking for motivated individuals to join the Data Operations Team to work as an aerial survey camera technician.
Based at APEM’s operational office in Chester, you will be expected to routinely undertake survey flights as an aerial survey technician. When not flying, you will be asked to assist with data processing duties. You will operate various camera systems on-board survey aircraft. Full training will be provided. Overseas work may form part of this role, therefore a current passport is required with no restrictions. A driving licence is also a requirement.
Duties will include:
- Operation of our airborne sensors
- Communicating with the pilot prior to flight to brief him/her on the daily plan and any specific requirements
- Conducting system installations and ground testing of sensors prior to survey flights
- Ensuring all survey flight plans are correct and loaded onto the camera system
- Preparing Risk Assessment paperwork for each survey
- Prepare all safety equipment for survey
- Download the flight data and logs to hard drives and ensure the safe storage of data in transit
- Post survey data handling and data delivery, including GIS and quality control work
- You will be a recent graduate in Geomatics, Remote Sensing, GIS, Ecology, Environmental Science, Geography, Photography or other relevant subject.
- You will ideally have some experience of working in the remote sensing, survey or professional photographic industry.
Successful applicants will be self-motivated, enthusiastic and able to work to tight deadlines. You will be able to work as part of a team and individually. Much of the work is carried out independently or as part of a small team so an ability to make good operational decisions is essential. Understanding of MS office packages is also essential.
The job will require you to work flexible hours due to the restrictions of weather and survey deadlines. This will mean long days and frequent overnight stays away from base/home until surveys are complete and will involve working on weekends and bank holidays as required. Flexibility and reliability are therefore essential requirements in this role, as is a good attention to detail.

- Essential: Able to operate survey equipment in light aircraft (i.e. not prone to travel sickness);
- Essential: Knowledge of basic photographic first principles;
- Essential: Comfortable with operating computers and survey equipment, the ability to troubleshoot system issues and resourcefulness in seeking solutions to problems;
- Essential: Full driving licence;
- Essential: Good swimming capabilities (as you will be required to pass a survival at sea training course);
- Desirable: Experience manned airborne digital camera system and LiDAR systems would be beneficial, but not essential (Training will be provided);
- Desirable: Experience/qualified in operating a UAV/UAS would be beneficial, but not essential;
- Desirable: Experience in topographic GNSS surveys would be beneficial, but not essential;
- Desirable: Experience with computer hardware/system would be beneficial, but not essential.
