APEM Limited is Europe’s largest specialist aquatic environmental consultancy. With over 30 years’ experience, we offer our clients an integrated approach to every aspect of the investigation and management of freshwater catchments and marine habitats and operate UK wide and internationally. Our consultants are recognised experts in their fields, and as a company we pride ourselves on our commitment to scientific rigour and an excellent service in providing solutions to our clients.
So far 2019 has been a big year for APEM. We have been awarded Water Industry Consultant of the Year and we completed a management buyout. We are heading for a new record turnover and are pushing forward into a number of new areas as well as expanding our teams in our traditional areas.
About the role
APEM is one of the leading UK providers of water quality assessment and management. Our services include water and sediment quality sampling to investigate the scale, nature and source of problems in a range of aquatic environments from ponds to reservoirs, rivers and estuaries. Using the data that we collect we diagnose the causes of water quality problems and design programmes to manage these issues
A large, and growing, part of this work is algal bloom assessment and management. As our water quality team expands, and as algal blooms become an increasing problem throughout the UK, we are looking to enhance our capacity in this area.
The purpose of the role will be to boost our ability to provide advice to a range of clients on water quality management, in particular algal bloom management. This will include analysis of data to identify the cause of blooms, nutrient budget investigations and the development of nutrient and water budgets and assessment of management and restoration options for short and long-term algal control.
You will work within a dynamic team of aquatic environmental scientists with cross-cutting expertise in ecology, hydrology, geomorphology, water quality, fisheries and natural and social capital, to deliver a range of projects for a wide range of clients including government bodies, water companies, recreational centres, event organisers and angling associations.
Key features of the Senior Consultant role will be managing a range of projects to ensure the delivery of high quality outputs within budget. This role will also require contributing to or leading the production of competitive tenders.
You will be primarily office-based, although site visits and client meetings will be required.
There are excellent opportunities for career progression and development.
Candidates should have experience of undertaking water quality assessments and providing advice on management options e.g. chemical, biological or physical, ideally algal bloom assessments.
While laboratory identification of algae will not be a key component of this role, some previous experience of this would be advantageous.
As this is a senior role, we would ideally expect experience of working extensively in or with the consultancy sector.
You will be an enthusiastic self-starter with an interest in the environment. You will be qualified to a minimum of BSc. level in a relevant discipline, with evidence of experience relevant to the grade and role you are applying for. Whether you are an applicant with academic, regulatory, consultancy or third sector experience, you will need to demonstrate your ability to apply your skills in a fast-paced commercial consultancy through experience of managing projects and dealing with people effectively and professionally.
You will have good IT literacy and data analysis skills, will be numerate and have a good eye for detail.
